Chapter 19
Eden woke with a shudder, finding the sheets hanging off the side of the bed. He’d had a fitful night’s sleep, tossing and turning, unable to find comfort in this most comfortable of places. He rubbed his dry eyes. They felt sore and puffy.
Last night had been horrendous. He cringed as he recalled the rejected kiss. He couldn’t get rid of the image of Kylor turning his head away. It stabbed at his heart.
This last month had been so stressful, with Eden pushing himself to the limit to put on the best show he possibly could. He recognised that Kylor had gone out on a limb to give him this wonderful opportunity and he hadn’t wanted to disappoint. But Eden was only now realising the extent to which the man came before the job in his mind. He’d fallen for Kylor even before he knew who he was. The job offer had been a bonus—a massive bonus—but everything Eden had done at Maelstrom, he’d done with the sole aim of impressing Kylor. Eden felt he needed to prove he was worthy of a man such as him. But all his efforts felt hollow now because Kylor didn’t want him and Eden had lost all motivation. He couldn’t see a way of picking himself back up. He was totally crushed by Kylor’s rejection.
Last night he’d cried so hard he felt both physically and emotionally drained. It felt like every last drop of moisture had been extracted from his body. He hadn’t cried like that since his mom died.
He realised Kylor hadn’t promised him anything on the personal front. It was Eden who’d set all the expectations in his own mind. But still, he hadn’t simply imagined the electricity between them that first night. But it appeared that Mr. Knightley was capable of controlling his emotions and had arbitrarily decided that they weren’t right for each other. Eden hated being dismissed as unsuitable in such an offhand manner. He wasn’t sure he could forgive Kylor for that.
Eden thought about calling in sick to give himself some thinking time, but he felt too ashamed to do that. Whatever excuse he might come up with, Jack would see right through it. He’d know the real reason Eden couldn’t face going in and he’d just end up looking like an even bigger fool than he felt already. He couldn’t possibly tell Jack the truth. Eden cringed when he envisaged that conversation.
“Sorry I can’t make it in this morning, only I cried myself to sleep because Kylor doesn’t love me.”
Yeah, right! Like that phone call is ever going to happen.
A dry sob rattled in Eden’s throat.
Damn you, Kylor Knightley!
He felt trapped in a loveless non-relationship and it was becoming clearer with each passing minute what he needed to do. The last time he’d felt this bad, he’d only managed to pick himself up by escaping the life he knew for a fresh start in a different country.
Maybe this was fate’s way of telling him it was time to move on again.
